Digital RAW photography on the left edited to match the colours/ tones of the negative film scan on the right, Kodak portra 160NC. If you shoot both digital and film photography you will probably want to match the two very different mediums closely, especially if they are to be shown side by side. In this retouched digital RAW example, the goal was to simulate the characteristics of the film closely, though exact matches of colour were not paramount as film in itself is somewhat variable in nature. The characteristics I speak of in general are retained highlights, somewhat expanded dynamic range, relatively flat contrast though not dull. Deep, subdued and natural colours. A tonal range that looks close to how the photo would have looked with the human eye. The image has a soft sharpness with a slight grain in the shadows which I have included in the film simulation. Skin tones are a bit different to what I would expect from Kodak Portra 160NC, although who really knows what the film is really supposed to look like anyway? Regardless, the skin tones here were quite deep and muted, with a slight warmth in the shadows. So whatever your Kodak Portra film looks like to you, I could try matching your digital RAW photo to it. |
